The science group was formed at the end of 2011 to look at modern aspects of science and technology.
Recent topics for discussion have included:
- Astronomy - including a visit to UMIST's Godlee Observatory in Manchester (see pictures below)
- Electric Cars and Climate change
- The Dark Web
- Black Holes
- RNA vaccines
- Fusion Technology
- Ageing - answering questions such as "is ageing reversible?"
- Viruses and pandemics - where we predicted the rise of a novel virus appearing pre-Covid!
- Medicine manufacture from one of our pharmaceutical experts!
- Artificial Intelligence - colloquially AI!
The group is a mixture of people from both a scientific and non scientific background - but with one common interest: the impact of science and technology on society and the individual. Discussions are held following a presentation either verbally or via multimedia and implications are teased out - often of a novel nature.
New members are always welcome who are interested in and intrigued by scientific discoveries and their implications. Interest is paramount, expertise secondary!
Interesting note: Technology is derived from the Greek word techne which signified creative power and is presented as superior to merely natural instincts (physis).
