The science group was formed at the end of 2011 to look at modern aspects of science and technology.

Recent topics for discussion have included:

  • Astronomy - including a visit to UMIST's Godlee Observatory in Manchester (see pictures below)
  • Electric Cars and Climate change
  • The Dark Web
  • Black Holes
  • RNA vaccines
  • Fusion Technology
  • Ageing - answering questions such as "is ageing reversible?"
  • Viruses and pandemics - where we predicted the rise of a novel virus appearing pre-Covid!
  • Medicine manufacture from one of our pharmaceutical experts!
  • Artificial Intelligence - colloquially AI!

The group is a mixture of people from both a scientific and non scientific background - but with one common interest: the impact of science and technology on society and the individual. Discussions are held following a presentation either verbally or via multimedia and implications are teased out - often of a novel nature.

New members are always welcome who are interested in and intrigued by scientific discoveries and their implications. Interest is paramount, expertise secondary!

Interesting note: Technology is derived from the Greek word techne which signified creative power and is presented as superior to merely natural instincts (physis).
